Designed
and built by New York Architect John Barton, this traditional
adobe construction with contemporary twists was featured in “Su
Casa” magazine and “The Getaway Home.” Originally
off-grid on 25 acres, the environmentally friendly and energy
efficient construction is self-sustainable yet supported by a
private well. The main house and guest house annex are visually
connected by two curved walls providing a series of portals and
sheltered outdoor patios, while blending the structures into the
landscape with a sense of energy and movement.
Approximately
3000 square feet includes a spacious one bedroom with two baths
in the 1600sf main house and two bedrooms with one bath in the
1400sf guest round house. Main house family room can sleep additional
guests. Separate, approximately 250sf studio has heat, air conditioning,
telephone and electric with adjacent adobe sweat lodge.
Interior
details include organic sculpted walls with mica plaster finish,
stone countertops, custom doors and cabinetry, mosaic tile tub
surround; flagstone, stained concrete, and plank wood floors.
Appliances include Kitchenaid and GE gas range, refrigerator,
and microwave and front load washer. Ample storage includes walk
in closets. Satellite TV and Internet available on site. Galvanized
steel shed roof is 10 years old. Propane tank conveys with sale.
Construction
completed in 2000 with solar orientation and interior thermal
mass adobe walls that help heat and cool the interior year round.
Additional heat sources are hot water radiant, three propane heaters,
and three wood burning stoves in living room and master bedroom
in main house and living room in guest house. Windows frame sweeping
mountain views from Pedernal to Taos Mountain. Grey water irrigation
system maintains trees, xeriscape, cherry, pear and apple trees.
Barely
discernible in the distance, the low slung structures rest among
rolling hills of piñon and juniper with 360° views.
